Don’t take out a loan?

July 16, 2009

Monday I met with a wonderful young attorney who started her practice in March. Like most solo lawyers, she is trying to do it out of pocket. Her operating budget is $300/mo currently. Close your mouth… I know she hasn’t budgeted a pay check for herself! I asked why she didn’t do what every other business in America does when they want to succeed and borrow some capital. She told me they advised against  it in law school. The irony of professors telligng law students who run up an average of $100,000 in loans just to get the degree not to borrow to start their practice kills me.

Fast forward to yesterday. I met with an attorney who employee 7 other attorneys plus several staff. She is expanding her office to Boston. Her practice area deals with IPO’s, venture capitalists and start ups. Her business is growing during this recession and she is investing in the firm’s infrastructure. I shared this story with her and she said “you can’t start a business without capital.”

All too often we do not see the growth in our business for which we hope when we hold the power to make it happen. Personally, I have several conference call on Monday making it difficult to visit with clients. Monday was my lowest production day as a result. I now take my conference calls in the car en route to appointments. Monday is no long a poor production day.

Wouldn’t you like to develop a plan of action to make the changes you desire reality?
