Google is asking for your help.

March 5, 2010

In a recent post on Matt Cutt’s blog, he asked for help with link spam. He directs us to visit the spam reporting tool. This is available to all.

This article reminded me of a question I was asked Monday: “What do I care what they are doing as long as they get results?”

We’ll forgo the ethics argument for the time being. If results are what’s important to you, you’re risking it all by breaking the rules. Google can blacklist your site and you’re done. If Google’s penalizes the vendor from whom you’re are contracted, your going to loss a lot on money. There are no terms of performance on the contract. When the vendor’s directory losses it page rank, your buying worthless link without a claim on non-performance to break your contract.

With the full knowledge of the penalties, you are now likely considering the odds of being caught. Do you think your competitor will submit you? Do you think another vendor will submit you knowing you be ready to hear them out when your site is black listed? Odds just became much less attractive.
