Google SEO Resource for Beginners

January 26, 2010

Google Webmaster Central is an excellent resource for those of us who make a living in internet marketing, but it is also great for those who would prefer to outsource their website and or SEO services. When I read this article on Webmaster Central titled Google SEO Resource for Beginners this morning several recent issues came to mind.

Today I am going to an appointment with a successful attorney that began practicing before the bar allowed advertising. Our appointment was scheduled after another service provider pitched their services, but something during that meeting made the attorney decided he would prefer to NOT work with that company. He sited several points for our agenda today, many of which I recognized as the value proposition of that company. I will not name this company. I will say that they hold themselves out as an SEO company, but those of us who know what SEO is would vigorously disagree.

What’s the lesson? Do the necessary research to know who’s for real.

I received an e-mail from a web site developer from that same company to a client stating that a website we were building using a “non-web friendly font” that eliminates the optimization benefit of the content. WOW! He put that junk in writing! What he was referring is the standard choice of fonts used on the website. Developers stipulate in the code the font desired by the client along with a several back up fonts in the event that the computer on which the searcher is viewing your website doe not have that font installed. The negative affect would be on the formating of the page one that one computer, but remember you chose three options so the computer will choose the next one installed on the computer. Is has no affect on “optimization.”

I quote “optimization” because their isn’t a codified definition of this term, yet people through it around as if  there were. I encourage you to read this article as it will help you choose the best service provider.
